Remembering Margaret MacVicar
Professor Margaret L.A. MacVicar was an outstanding educator and scientist who founded MIT's famous Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and went on to serve as MIT's first Dean for Undergraduate Education until her untimely death in 1991 at the age of 47. She was nationally recognized for her leadership in shaping policies both for undergraduate education and for science education in public schools. The MacVicar Faculty Fellowship program was established in her memory and has become one of MIT’s highest teaching honors. This video was created on the 10-year anniversary of her death to remember Professor MacVicar and her many contributions at MIT.

Wow, what a great tribute to Professor MacVicar. I was here as an undergraduate at MIT when she died and I really didn't have a sense of who she was, just that she had founded UROP and that everyone was devastated by her death. It was great to hear the comments of her student in this video.

Professor MacVicar came to Utah State University to advise on starting an undergraduate research program, which came into being in 1975. USU celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2010. We owe a great deal to Professor MacVicar. This video is a fabulous tribute to a person who had a tremendous influence not only on her home institution but also on universities across the nation.
